79 camaro probelms?

I just put a brand new crate 350 in my 79 camaro and when i got it all together and went to start it one of my wires from the front of the fire wall started smokeing ...this only happens when the starter is engaged when i checked the wire it appears to be the red wire that runs to the starter i dont know i could be wrong it could be the purple one . I was going to put a Ford Solenoid on it to see if maybe i could hook it up that way and maybe re-direct the volts going back up the wire i dont know......keep in mind when i engage the starter the motor turns a half turn thats when i get the smoke and i am not useing the stock starter i bought a mini starter ( header issues)

I own a shop, and think this; The wire that smoked "is" the wire that's going to ground some place. A common problem is for this wire to get between the bell-housing & block when installing the transmission to the engine. Do this: Get a new wire, and cut the wire that melted at the firewall. Splice in the new wire there, and run it to the starter. If it then works fine, you have found the problem. 90% of the time; the wire that smokes "is" the one that is shorting to ground. Unhook it from the starter, cut it at the firewall, and jump in the new 12-14 gage wire. If it does the same thing, then you have an internal short inside the starter, and will have to replace it.
