Should I fix my Xbox 360 (with Red Ring of Death) or just get the new slim Playstation 3?
The Xbox 360 is sitting in my storage unit, but I want to play video games right after I collect a few more paychecks from my new job. I have been contemplating this for a while.
I have a bunch of peripherals for my Xbox because it was lasting longer than I thought. Then after 2 years, I get the notorious Red Ring of Death.
I have the original Rock Band instruments, a Guitar Hero II X-Plorer, 2 Plug-and-Charge Kits, and the Xbox 360 Remote. I feel like I should just sell all of this in a bundle on eBay or craigslist, then go to a store and buy a Playstation 3 bundle with the HD cables and an extra controller.
Thoughts anyone?
I had somewhat of the same problem not too long ago. I had the first line of Xbox 360 from back in 2005. It lasted a good 3 years before I got the RROD. Fortunately, my warranty was still in effect and they fixed it for free. From the time I registered my Xbox online to send it in for repairs to the time I got it back, the entire process took about 3 to 4 weeks. However, a year later the disc drive failed on me and so it became incapable of reading discs; games, DVD or otherwise. By this time my warranty had expired and so it came down to three choices, respectively: (1) Have Microsoft charge me $100+ to "fix" the disc drive, (2) Buy a brand new system, (3) Sell all my games/peripherals, and use that money to buy a PS3 Slim. Now if you feel that those are the same choices you have, you might want to think about it carefully. First, you need to acknowledge the fact that when buying or fixing an Xbox, it isn't a matter of "if" it will break down again, but "when" it will break down again. Even the new elites have a failure rate significantly higher than the Wii and PS3...combined. Also, think about what kind of games you like, whether those games are Xbox exclusives or for multiple systems, and how much money you have invested in Xbox live downloads (it's difficult to sell digital content such as game add-ons and gamertags). In my opinion, Xbox has way better exclusives and significantly better graphics. Xbox has anti-aliasing which smooths out a lot of the polygons (look at the comparison video for Fallout 3 and you will know exactly what I mean). And like I said before, better exclusives (Gears of War, Halo, Left for Dead, Mass Effect, etc.) including more downloadable content. On the other hand, PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player, free online play, and the PS3 Slim is incredibly quiet, energy efficient (no power bar), and compact. This won't be an easy decision, it had me sitting on the fence for a while before I decided what to do. This is what I eventually did:
I traded in all the multi-platform games (Call of Duty, GTA4, Fallout 3, etc.) and some unnecessary peripherals such as a wired controller, and put that money towards a PS3 Slim. I saved my Xbox along with a couple of my most favorite exclusive games (Mass Effect, Left for Dead, Gears of War 2 and Halo 3). All that trading paid for more than two-thirds of the PS3 Slim. Then I spent the next couples months just renting game after game after game.
Though I still miss playing my Xbox and have recently considered buying another one, I have no regrets about buying the PS3.You may feel the same way, you may not. Best bet is to do as much research as you can, take some time to think about it (took me several months to come to a decision), and then just go with you gut.
